The Council of Teachers of Southeast Asian Languages (COTSEAL) was formed in 1984 as a professional interest group whose primary purpose is to promote the discipline of Southeast Asian language teaching at all levels. Methodology, materials development, research and applied linguistics focusing on the teaching resources, writing and learning of Southeast Asian languages are concerns of the membership. COTSEAL membership is open to interested individuals from around the world who have a professional interest in the teaching of these languages. In July each year, COTSEAL sponsors the Conference on Southeast Asian Language Teaching, custom essay writing and Applied Linguistics, which is usually held at the site of the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI).

COTSEAL also receives some financial support grants from six Southeast Asian Centers/Programs in the U.S., in addition also receives support for conference in July from the Center for Southeast Asian Studies and SEASSI of the University-Wisconsin/Madison.

Southeast Asian Studies at SAIS-JHU adds “Burmese” as one of the required languages in addition to Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese.
